FusionWorks capitalizes on important market needs
By: RODRIGO LOPEZ CHAVEZ

In order to have a successful business, there are many elements that have to come together. However, none seems more important than having an actual niche in the market.

This has proved true for the people at FusionWorks, as business has experienced unexpectedly large growth in a short time. Jorge Mejia, the company’s general manager, told CARIBBEAN BUSINESS: “We started in April 2002 with five people and no clients. Now, we have 20 [employees], and we serve more than 25 clients.”

FusionWorks is an independent company that offers various services, like business & technology advising, strategic business planning, mechanization planning, applications implementation & maintenance, database maintenance, and Web design. “We are basically a service company that implements business applications,” said Mejia.

“We work with the client. As a consultant, you sell knowledge, and the only way clients retain what they buy is if you transmit that knowledge to them,” said Mejia. According to Mejia, change management, which involves the client’s adoption of a new method of doing things, is especially difficult.

He said, “We also have strategic alliances that increase the inventory of skills available to our clients.” These alliances allow FusionWorks to have a presence in Panama, the Dominican Republic, and the U.S. mainland.

“We saw a need in the market for companies that were independent from software developers. This type of company would be able to provide [implementation] services,” said Mejia. He also said, “Being our client means getting real solutions at a reasonable price and with greater objectivity. That’s why we have been so successful...Most companies out there rely more on technical knowledge.”
FusionWorks operates three basic technologies: Oracle, Microsoft, and PeopleSoft. In the case of Oracle, one of the programs used by FusionWorks is Sense Software, useful for human resources and payroll tasks. Profits is a program based on PeopleSoft technology, useful for managing and developing budgets.

However, despite its knowledge of these technologies, Mejia said FusionWorks usually adapts to clients’ technology, executes the implementation, and provides support & maintenance. “Our core business requires added skills, such as project management, operations analysis, process engineering, and change management. Some clients even request those services independently,“ Mejia said.

He said there is a gap between the level of technology sophistication acquired by businesses and the level of knowledge employees have to use these technologies. “Sometimes we find employees only use 20% of a given technology. Other clients can use 60% of a given technology at one point, but they lose that ability because they don’t have continuation plans,” said Mejia.
